Codecoop.org Project News HighlightsThis is the end of codecoop.org as we know it.
http://codecoop.org/forum/forum.php?forum_id=352
Short version:
- We plan to turn off the GForge-installation on codecoop.org on April 30. 2010.
- We are working on an alternative service as a replacement.
- An early beta-version of the replacement can be found at http://labs.so36.net/.
- There will not be an automated migration of your projects to a new platform.
- We would love to hear your opinion on our plans.
Long version:
Codecoop.org was established around 2004 to offer a platform for collaboration on software projects. Most of these projects were related to publishing independent media on the internet and other mostly political aims.
Right from the beginning, codecoop.org was the online home for the "mir"-content-management-system and also the template-repository for many local IMCs that run on the mir-software.
The admins of codecoop.org wanted to establish more than a simple CVS-server for source code management. So the GForge-platform was chosen to offer a web-fontend to the source code and a wide variety of web-based project management- and communication-tools.
Offering a nice accessible interface to the hosted projects turned out to be very valuable for most of the projects. Having URLs to point volunteers to and simple web-forms for submitting feature-requests or bug-reports made it much easier to integrate new project members. People without a deep knowledge of Java or the UNIX-Commandline were able to contribute to the projects.
One thing the codecoop-platform definitely achieved, was connecting progressive software-projects by making them visible to each other.
Unfortunately we were not a successful in building a community around codecoop.org. There was never much discussion in the many forums, most projects did not publish news-updates and only a few of the mailing-lists where ever used on a regular base.
One of the reasons is the feature-overload that comes with GForge. Project members had a hard time finding out just where to connect and to discuss because gforge offered so many alternative choices.
With all the features there is a lot of work for the codecoop-server-admins. They have to maintain a mailing-list manager, a separate DNS-Server etc. This becomes extra painful if the whole platform has to be moved or upgraded.
Over the years the patterns of online-collaboration for software-projects have changed. CVS and SVN are outdated. Today there is decentralized version control with tools like Git or Bazaar.
Leaner, more agile web-frontends like Trac or GitHub? have emerged. Most of them offer a rather small set of tools. But each of these tools is tailored very well for the requirements of todays software development.
After working with such more modern tools for a couple of years we figured out, that they would also offer a more useful alternative to the GForge-platform on codecoop.org.
To gather some more experience we started an internal trac-instance and the public website labs.so36.net which uses the Redmine-software written in Ruby.
So far we like what we see and came to the conclusion, that we would like to get rid of GForge and offer source-code- and project-managment based on a new software-tool, Redmine being our favorite at the moment.
So this is our plan for the first quarter of 2010:
We immediately stop accepting new projects on codecoop.org. Instead we offer people our new redmine-platform on labs.so36.net.
We ask the current users of codecoop.org to prepare for the closure of the GForge-platform by downloading their code and data.
On March 31. we freeze the repositories on codecoop.org. From that day on they will be read-only.
On April 30, the GForge-platform is removed.
If one of the existing projects still needs it, maybe cvs.codecoop.org and the hosted repositories could be preserved as an archive.
There will not be an automated migration to the new platform. If we don't hear from an existing project and the project does not actively move to the new platform, the projects data will be lost. Don't let that scare you. If you feel uncertain about how to proceed with your project, just write us an email and we will figure something out together.
We would really love to hear your options on our plans:
- What are your experiences with online software-project-managment?
- What version control system do you user for you sourcecode?
- And why?
- Do you think that redmine could be a good replacement for gforge?
- Are there any other tools we should look at?
